2 K-Plant Workers in Chennai hospital Now

Two severely scalded workers of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), who were undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, were shifted to a multi-specialty hospital in Chennai on Thursday.

NAGERCOIL / TIRUNELVELI: Two severely scalded workers of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), who were undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, were shifted to a multi-specialty hospital in Chennai on Thursday.

Six workers, including three regulars and three contract workers who sustained severe burn injuries after hot water spilled on them from a value at Unit I of KKNPP, were admitted to a private orthopaedic hospital in Chu-nkankadai on the town outskirts here on Wednesday.

A team of doctors including specialists from Madurai visited the workers at the ho-spital on Thursday and decided to refer Mahesh Kumar (23) and Rajan (21), who suffered more than 70 percent burn injuries, to a multi-specialty hospital in Chennai, senior officials said.

The other injured workers — Paulraj (33), Senthil Kumar (40) Mahesh Kumar (23), Rajesh (21) and Vinu (23) — were said to be out of danger. Hospital sources said that it would take at least a week for them to be discharged. KKNPP site Director R S Sundar, who visited the injured at the hospital on Wednesday night, enquired about the treatment being given to them.

PMANE Stir Today

The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) plans to stage a protest in Idinathakarai on Friday condemning the hot water spillage at the KKNPP on Wednesday. Also, fishermen and shop keepers have decided to observe a one-day strike on Friday, condemning the incident and demanding an inquiry into it.

A five-member KKNPP team, headed by a senior safety engineer has started probing hot-water spillage from a valve of a turbine at Unit-1 of the plant.
