Antecedents of Lawyers Enrolling in Bar Sought

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has sought details of law graduates who were about to enrol themselves in the TN Bar Council and also the list of graduates with criminal background.

Justice N Kirubakaran, who had earlier granted an interim stay on the enrolment of advocates, on Wednesday directed the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to submit a report on the law graduates who are seeking enrolment including their criminal background and adjourned the case to Friday.

Earlier, a Madurai based advocate S M Anantha Murugan approached the court seeking to postpone the enrolment of law graduates  alleging that many of them had “purchased” LLB degrees from private law colleges in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand,  and had criminal cases pending against them. He also contended that their backgrounds were not verified and the police issued no objection certificates by receiving illegal gratification.
