TN to Get 15th Wildlife Sanctuary in Nellai District

CHENNAI:  The 15th wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu will come up in Tirunelveli district, known for its rich bio-diversity, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced in the State Assembly on Monday. Similarly, Osudu lake in Villupuram district would be made as the 15th bird sanctuary of the State.

Making a suo motu statement under Rule 110, the Chief Minister said at present, in Tamil Nadu, there are 5 National parks, 14 Wildlife sanctuaries, 14 bird sanctuaries and one conservation reserve besides four Tiger Reserves and four elephant sanctuaries and three Bio-sphere Reserves and one protected Area.

She said Rs 110 crore would be spent during the current year for various measures aimed at greening of State, protecting the bio-diversity and developing the natural resources by planting trees in the lands owned by private parties etc., Additionally, Rs 35.62 crore would be spent on increasing the green cover.
