Trivial Incident Triggers Clash Between Two Groups in Pondy

PUDUCHERRY : Tension prevailed at Thirukkanur, near here, after two groups of people clashed following a trivial incident on Saturday night. Two policemen and four persons were injured in the incident.

Police said Panjamurthy, a resident of Settipet, and four others were coming in a car. When they reached Koonichampet checkpost, the car almost collided with a bike coming from the opposite direction. There were heated  exchanges between the rider Datchinamurty and his friend Sarathi on the pillion and the those in the car. Following this, the men in the car allegedly assaulted the duo.

On learning this, the police reached the spot and separated the agitated rival groups and asked them to go to  the nearby police  station.

Datchinamurthy and Sarathi did that, but the car passengers did not turn up. Enraged by this, villagers of Koonichampet and relatives of Datchinamurthy came to the police station and demanded the immediate arrest of those who were in the car. They even resorted to a road blockade.

The police, meanwhile, managed to bring the car passengers in a police jeep to the station. On seeing them, the people who were involved in blocking the road tried to attack them. The situation came under control with the intervention of the police. And the group began hurling stones at the police station.

Fearing the situation may go out of hand, police cane charged the crowd. In the melee, two police constables and four persons sustained injuries.

Cases were registered against five persons, including Panjamurthy. Further investigations are on.
