ERODE: Former Union Minister G K Vasan dismissed rumours of revival of Tamil Maanila Congress in Tamil Nadu, a party launched by his father late G K Moopanar in 1996, and said reports in this regard are just media hype.
"There is no truth to reports of revival of the party in Tamil Nadu and news in this regard is just media hype," he told reporters here today.
Moopanar broke away from Congress to float TMC in 1996 and his party merged with Congress in 2002. On the Leader of the Opposition issue, he said the BJP was "afraid" of facing Congress in Parliament and that was why it had refused to allot the post to the party.
He alleged that no developmental work had been undertaken in the country even three months after BJP came to power at the Centre and said the party had not followed up its promises made to the electorate in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.
On the fishermen's issue, he hoped that a meeting between fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka would be convened soon and said India should insist at the meeting that the island nation immediately hand over all 63 boats seized by its navy.
He also dismissed reports of factionalism in the state unit of Congress and said TNCC under the presidentship of B Gnanadesikan was functioning efficiently.
Vasan alleged that law and order in Tamil Nadu was not upto the mark and urged police to take strong action against terrorists, anti-socials and other criminals without fear or favour.
