Neighbour Jailed for Harassing Teen

SALEM: For the first time in Salem a conviction has been made in a sexual harassment case by the judicial magistrate court here on Thursday. According to the prosecution, Gomathy (name changed), a class IX student aged 14 years, was living with her parents on the second floor of a TNSCB apartment in Andipatti near Shevapet. She was sexually harassed for nearly three years by one Shankar (45) (name changed), who stayed on the ground floor. Ravi had been misbehaving with the girl whenever she came down to go to school or the market. As there was no end to Ravi’s torture, Gomathy in November 2011 told her mother Medha about the man’s behaviour.  Following this, Medha lodged a complaint with the Shevapet police who booked a case and filed chargesheet in the Judicial Magistrate Court III. Judicial magistrate Mekala Mythili delivering the judgement in the case on Thursday convicted and sentenced Ravi to two years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of `10,000 on him.
