Thoothukudi Youth's Drama Falls Flat

THOOTHUKUDI: A 25-year-old man who had allegedly murdered his cousin in Thattarmadam in the district was arrested on Tuesday after he had enacted a suicide drama to evade arrest for the past two days, police said.

The accused, John Singh, on Tuesday morning had gone to one of his friend’s house in Muthammalpuram, just a kilometer from Thattarmadam, where he was arrested by the police. While providing John Singh food, his friend had called the police without John’s knowledge.

On information, the Thattarmadam police rushed to the spot and arrested him and was interrogated at the Thattarmadam police station.

During the interrogation, he had told the cops that his parents had died at a very young age and had grown up in his relative’s house.

While he was struggling in his life, his cousin, Jeslima Annal Rose, and her husband had helped him by setting up the tea shop and made him stay at their home, during which he had developed an illicit relationship with Jeslima. But recently as her husband came to know about this, he had warned him.

Hence, he had decided to elope with her and on Saturday night, he approached her but she shouted at him.

Following the incident, he murdered Jeslima Annal Roser, John said in his statement to the police.

Police sources claimed that they initially thought that he had committed suicide by seeing his floating slippers in the well and his bike parked near the well.

Fire fighters were also employed to rescue the body and as the depth of the well had exceeded 60 feet, professional divers were also called from Thoothukudi, sources said.

The sources also claimed that the rescue operation was carried out for two days but at the end of the second day, police had determined that John Singh could have foxed them by enacting a suicide drama.

On Monday night an extensive search operation was carried out and all his friends were asked to inform police if they knew anything about John Singh, claimed the sources.

The sources added that John Singh had been hiding in the nearby agricultural fields and had not consumed food for the past two days so he went to his friend’s house.

John Singh murdered Jeslima by throwing pestle on her head on Saturday night.
