CHENNAI: Multitasking is an art best learnt from a rabid Rajini fan. Torn between wanting to wish the Superstar on his birthday and catching the pre-dawn first-day-first-show of his film Lingaa, they’ve come up with the perfect solution - club ‘em up. After gathering outside the Kasi Theatre at 11 pm, fans will cut a cake at midnight for Rajini’s 64th and then proceed to watch the special show at 1 am. More such shows are being organised in various theatres, inspired by this group.

Jointly organised by a few fan clubs in South Chennai and primarily by the Facebook networked group RBSI (Rajini Biggest Superstar of India) the super-early show will be the culmination of eight hours of advance fanfare. “The celebrations for our Thalaivar will begin at 4 pm on Thursday. All the fan club members will gather there and we will begin reliving songs and memories through the evening till midnight,” explains a harried Saidai G Ravi, a man who has been running a fan club in Saidapet for 27 years. “And then there will be fireworks.”

The idea for the show had begun close to two weeks ago and members of RBSI, die hard Superstar fans all, have been running back and forth between the theatre and the distributor to let them do it. “It is the only way in which we can celebrate his birthday and also watch the show first. In his 40 years in the industry, such a rare occurrence of a new release, his birthday and it being a Friday has almost never occurred. So the tee-shirts are printed, tickets have been distributed and we’re ready,” said an excited Vinodh K, a moderator with RBSI’s Facebook page. They’re also confident that police permissions will fall into place somehow.

And what of the paal abhishekhams? Will that tradition make way for cake this time, you may wonder. “No chance. There can be no Rajini release without doing it. We’ll probably have to squeeze it in,” said Murugan, an organiser.
