VELLORE : District Collector R Nanthagopal has banned the use of cell phones by students in government schools during school hours, warning them of severe action if they flout this directive.

The Chief Education Officer, V Ravikumar, said, “We have also advised the private and matriculation schools in the district to follow the same directions to ensure the safety of the students.”

The Collector’s and the Education Department’s directive follows the murder of a 10 year-old school girl by a class X student of the same school a week ago.

In a confession statement, the juvenile delinquent said that he along with a few of his friends use to watch porn on mobile phones. He got addicted to it, which later led to the murder of the minor girl last week.

The teachers have also been advised not to use mobile phones during class hours.

The Education Department has also recommended teachers meeting parents frequently.

“We have advised head masters of schools to convene meetings with parents frequently to discuss students’ issues. The School Disciplinary Committees has also been directed to be proactive,” CEO said.
