In a first such initiative in State-run schools, the Madurai Corporation has decided to introduce buses for students of institutions run by the civic body. The move is aimed at sustaining and enhancing the students’ enrolment rate in Corporation schools.
Announcing this while presenting the Budget 2014-15 on Thursday, Mayor V V Rajan Chellappa said that allocation of funds would soon be finalised to introduce a fleet of buses to facilitate travel of around 13,835 students of 66 Corporation schools. These include 27 primary institutions and 14 middle schools.
“The Corporation was forced to close a school on South Veli Street and two more are on the verge of closure due to poor strength,” Suganthi Ashok, chairperson, Madurai Corporation Education Committee said.
