A day after an engineering student committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of the college building, police have filed case against five faculty members of the private engineering college. A deputy tahsildar-level enquiry has also been initiated.
Vinothini (18), daughter of Ilango and a resident of Sultanpet, had committed suicide on Monday.
Speaking to Express, Ilango alleged that his daughter had been ill-treated and harassed by the faculty members because of her poor knowledge in English. He claimed that they often ridiculed her, which caused mental agony for her. This forced her to take the extreme step, he said and demanded action against those responsible for her death.
Inspector Jayaraman told Express that an FIR has been filed under section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide) following a complaint by Ilango. Five faculty members -- Ernest Paul, Bhavani, Geetha, Priyadarshini and Sethupathi -- have been named in the FIR.
