VILLUPURAM: The District Crime Branch (DCB) police on Tuesday arrested a 49-year-old Pakistani woman here on charges of forging documents to obtain a passport. Police sources said she has been residing in India for the past 25 years with a temporary visa, which was renewed till 2016.
According to the police, one Khalifa Abdullah of K K Nagar in Kallakuruchi, had gone to Dubai years ago, where he met Hawabi (49), a Pakistani woman. They got married in 1976 and have five children.
The couple then came to India in 1989 and since then, Hawabi has been residing here on temporary visa, which she renewed once every five years. Meanwhile, a few months ago, the couple shifted from K K Nagar to another house in Kallakuruchi. Concealing the information that she was staying in the country on a temporary visa, she got her name included in the ration card and also got an Aadhaar card. Using these documents, Hawabi applied for an Indian passport. She was also planning to go to Dubai to meet her ailing mother.
However, the Villupuram DCB police got information regarding this and they arrested Hawabi on Tuesday evening. She was presented before the Kallakuruchi Magistrate in the evening.
A police official from DCB said Hawabi had surrendered her Pakistan passport in New Delhi and tried to get Indian nationality in 1992, but she was denied that. As such, she continued to reside here on temporary visa. The last time she renewed her visa was in January 2011.
The official added that persons residing in India with a temporary visa were always under surveillance of CB officials in the area they are staying in and police officials regularly collect details about them.
