Sham Meeting Forces Cadre to Take Aim at Party Leaders on Facebook

CUDDALORE: For the first time on Monday, the DMK men on Facebook were seen posting messages, making fun of their own party and criticising the leadership regarding the party high-level committee meeting that concluded without taking any important decision.

The members were upset over the DMK leadership for not taking any action against the inefficient district secretaries and certain bigwigs of the party, who allegedly played spoilsport in the recently concluded Parliamentary election due to intra-party conflicts.

DMK members on Facebook were usually known for strongly defending their party even during uncomfortable circumstances such as the 2G allegation, supporting Congress and lately during Azhagiri’s expulsion from the party. But now, even these DMK members have virtually lost their hopes after the conclusion of the DMK’s high-level committee meeting without taking any decisive action, even after the worst-ever election debacle. There were great expectations among the party cadre that their leadership would change some district secretaries and functionaries, and the cadre were disappointed at this.

For the cadre, the only notable resolution passed in this meeting was that the party’s Parliamentary election candidates were asked to prepare and submit a detailed report about what went wrong in the election work.

A party cadre posted on FB: “Most of the candidates are supporters of the district secretaries. So definitely, these candidates will not complain about the district secretaries in their reports. I am sure the district secretaries would prepare these reports on behalf of the candidates. I see no hope for the party.”

Another cadre posted: “What is the point in conducting meetings like this? We only have two years for the 2016 election. This slow process will not help. If the party leadership fails to take a bold step, then the 2016 election will be another disappointment?”

A DMK supporter wrote: “With the existing set- up, we are not going to win a single seat in the coming elections. We have nothing to lose if these district secretaries join other parties. Take action against them.”

One political observer said, “It conveys the direction of the party. Yes, DMK is neither for cadre nor for people, it is turning into a cluster of defunct leaders.”

Another person wrote, “Earlier, cadre of other parties would criticise the DMK. but nowadays, DMK cadre have begun to criticise their party.”

DMK cadre on Facebook, by and large, expressed that most of the district secretaries, union secretaries and other functionaries should be changed, thereby relieving the  grassroots-level cadre from the bigwigs to work sincerely for the party.
