Anticipatory Bail Given to DMK Orator Leoni

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court granted anticipatory bail to Leoni, a DMK functionary and orator, for not appearing before the judicial magistrate Thiruthooraipoondi in Tiruvarur district after police filed an FIR against him.

The FIR was filed under section 171F (punishment for undue influence or personation at an election) and section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

After hearing a plea by Leoni, Justice P Devadass in his order stated that the bail was granted on conditions that the petitioner shall surrender before JM, Thiruthuraipoondi, Tiruvarur within 15 days of receipt of a copy of the order.

The judge said the petitioner should also execute a bond for `10,000 with two sureties each for a like sum to the satisfaction of the said judicial magistrate. The high court said only after executing the bond, the non-bailable warrant shall be recalled.

The court also directed the petitioner to appear before the judge on Monday and Friday at 10.30 am till further orders and also regularly attend the hearings unless his absence was condoned on a petition filed under section 317 Cr.Pc.
