VILLUPURAM: A special police team busted a fake IMFL manufacturing unit and arrested two persons at Athiyur Thiruvathi near Villupuram on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team, headed by ADSP Pandiarajan, rushed to a deserted spot near an old hardware shop at Athiyur Thiruvathi. The team found four persons involved in the brewing of arrack in a car. On seeing the police, the gang took to its heels.  But, the police officials caught two of them.

They were identified as Sundarajan (50), owner of the hardware shop, and A Selvam (48) of Mettupalayam in Pondicherry.

Police found that the  gang used to carry  the equipment for making arrack in their car. They used to move around and station their car in a deserted spot and make the arrack. Later, they would add sugar essence to make it look like brandy. They then transferred it into old brandy bottles and pasted duplicate labels and holograms. Officials seized the car, 260 litres of rectified spirit, 1,100 empty bottles, 1,300 duplicate holograms, 750 duplicate stickers, 430 bottle corks and a steel measuring cup.
