VELLORE: A 28-year-old man stoned his wife, who was eight months pregnant, to death in their house in Keelarasampet near Vellore during the early hours of Tuesday.

The police picked up G Babu (28) for the murder of Sivakumari (22).

According to the police, Babu and Sivakumari,  married for three years, had a two- year-old daughter Dharshini.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Babu suspected her fidelity and decided to murder her. He killed his wife with a grinding stone when she was fast asleep. The incident took place around 2 am.

After the crime, Babu laid down next to Sivakumari’s body on the verandah. The murder came to light when the neighbours found the pregnant woman’s body in a pool of blood. On information, the police rushed to the spot and detained Babu for inquiry.

Babu told the police that he pushed his wife following a quarrel and she had hit the wall and collapsed. The police grew suspicious after they found the grinding stone with blood stains.

The police took Babu for interrogation. Police officials said they would file a case and forward it to the Revenue Divisional Officer of Vellore for a Sub-judicial Magistrate inquest as the woman had died within seven years of marriage. The body was sent to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem.
