VELLORE: A couple staged a suicide drama to thwart an eviction drive against encroachments in the city on Friday. The couple was arrested for preventing the government officials from discharging their duty and for attempting suicide.

Sampath of Vaniyambadi had encroached upon the municipality land near CL Road in the city and constructed a two-storeyed building in 2010. The illegal construction came to light in 2012. The couple - Sampath and Devaki - approached the court but it  dismissed their plea on 4 June 2014.

The 200-square-foot land belonging to Municipality, was encroached upon by Sampath and his wife Devaki. Even though the commissioner had issued a notice, they refused to vacate.

When the officials had gone to demolish the building, Sampath and his wife threatened that they would jump to death from their building or blast the cylinder. The police arrested them and ended the drama.

Municipal Commissioner Ravi said,“ We’d issued   a notice but they refused to vacate and now are threatening to jump off the second floor. We’ve razed down one floor. On Saturday, we will demolish the remaining portion.”
