A 22-year-old student, along with his mother, allegedly murdered his paternal grandmother for not giving them money.

The personnel, attached to Melpatti police station, arrested the student Kalaiarasan, son of Thangavel and a resident of M V Kuppam near Pernambut, and his mother Venda (48), a widow, for beating his grandmother Valliyammal to death.

On March 20, Kalaiarasan, who was a first year student of a government college in Gudiyattam, and his mother had asked Valliyammal, who was living with her elder grandson Dhamodharan in a portion of the same house at M V Kuppam, to give them money for Kalaiarasan’s education. But, she refused to give them the money, saying that she did not have any savings.

Irked at his grandmother’s negative response, Kalaiarasan and his mother had quarrelled with Valliyammal and abused her, stating that she had been giving money to his elder brother Dhamodharan and his family but not to them. They had also beaten her up badly.

After sustaining injuries, the elderly woman had fainted. She was admitted to the Government Hospital for treatment. However, her health  deteriorated and she died at 2.30 am on Saturday.

The police registered a case against Kalaiarasan and Venda under section 302 (murder) of IPC, based on the statement obtained from Valliyammal. They were later arrested.
