Udayakumar Won't Back Out, Says Wife

A day after the AAP’s Kanyakumari LS candidate SP Udayakumar said that he was not worried about getting arrested and would go ahead to file the nomination, his wife Meera Udayakumar remarked that the PMANE founder had earned the confidence of the people as he had been spearheading the anti-KKNPP struggle for three years now in Idinthakarai.

“We are not worried about our arrest. We will come and file the nominations and face whatever happens thereafter,” Udayakumar told Express on Monday.

On Tuesday, Meera, who began campaigning for her husband in Kanyakumari, said: “People believe he is reliable and will stand for their cause till the end. He will not back off under any circumstances.”

On the response from people, she said, “We are happy about the support from the people.

As the fishermen community in Kanyakumari sympathise with the Idinthakarai people, their support for us is overwhelming. Also, we mainly stress the importance of the contract signed by Udayakumar with the voters.”

Talking further about their poll strategy, she said the voters had been given the assurance that they could call up their representative if their demands had not been fulfilled. This was something new and gives them the urge to exercise their franchise. “We also ask them to go through the manifesto,” she said.

“As AAP is for the common people we meet on the streets every day, we will strive for a dignified life for them. The governments before had always made the people to look out for freebies rather than empowering them. Apart from initiating efforts to meet the basic needs of the people, we assure to work for a dignified life for the common people,” she added.

Apart from Udayakumar, other AAP candidates, M Pushparayan (Thoothukudi) and MP Jesuraj (Tirunelveli), are campaigning in places such as Koottapuli, Uvari and other areas in and around Idinthakarai, while their supporters are seeking the support of voters in Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli.

Meera claimed that they had covered the coastal belt from Arockiapuram to Neerodi to Pallam and Annai Nagar. “In a few days, we will start campaign in non-coastal regions,” she added.
