62-year-old Inmate of Vellore Jail Dies of TB
A 62-year-old inmate of Vellore Central Prison for Men died on Thursday at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital , where he was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.
Lakshmanan (62), a resident of Morappur in Dharmapuri district, was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping a girl. Lakshmanan was undergoing imprisonment here for the last three years. His wife Saroja (52) was also awarded 10 years RI for helping him in the crime. She was lodged in the Special Prison for Women in Vellore, said source.
Lakshmanan was shifted to Government Medical College Hospital 45 days ago, after his condition worsened. He died during the late hours of Wednesday, said source.
Saroja paid tribute to her husband’s body in the hospital. The prison authorities have communicated about Lakshmanan’s death to his relatives.
