A new container terminal, the second of its kind, was inaugurated at V O Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi on Sunday.
Chairman of the port, S Anantha Chandra Bose, presided over the function. Ramji S Krishnan, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal (DBGT) was also present. The chairman flagged off the cargo work at the container vessel terminal at berth no 8 and handed it over to DGBT.
The modern container terminal is expected to be fully ready for commercial operations next year. This is the second such container terminal facility in the port; the first is located on berth no 7.
Joe Villavarayar, president, Thoothukudi Ship Agents Association, said the handling capacity of the port would increase twice from the present scenario.
