CHENNAI: Commenting on the LS poll results, Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa on Friday, in a statement, said the defeat of the Congress and DMK, known for their anti-people measures and corruption respectively, is a victory of democracy. “The results show that the people have rejected the selfish ones and elected those working for public welfare,” she said.

All the star candidates of the DMK including 2G scam-tainted A Raja (Nilgiris), former Union ministers Dayanidhi Maran (Central Chennai), T R Baalu (Thanjavur), S  Jagathrakshagan (Sriperumbudur) and party spokesperson TKS Elangovan (South Chennai) were defeated. For the first time, the DMK contested in 34 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and all of them bit the dust.

The Congress party too, for the first time, contested in all 39 seats alone, but drew a blank. From the BJP party State president Pon Radhakrishnan alone won from Kanyakumari constituency. The DMDK contested in 14 seats as part of the BJP-led NDA but could not win even a single seat.

The PMK contested in eight seats and won only one while the MDMK lost all.
