DMK Brass to Conduct Poll Post-Mortem

DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan has announced that the high- level strategy committee of the party will  meet on June 2 to discuss its  ‘disastrous’ show in LS elections.

CHENNAI: DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan has announced that the high- level strategy committee of the party will  meet on June 2 to discuss its  ‘disastrous’ show in LS elections.

The meet would be followed by sittings of various other bodies of the party, such as the governing council and executive committee.

The meetings would take place under the leadership of party patriarch M Karunanidhi at the Murasoli Maran Arangam at the party headquarters in Chennai.

Sources in the party said they do not expect any knee-jerk changes to the party structure or to key posts.

“We can be sure that the meetings will  be focussed on consolidation of what we already have, and only then go on to discuss ways to regain and expand the party base,” said a DMK senior leader, who is a former Minister.

“There is no doubt that there has been significant erosion of the party organisation in the southern districts thanks to the ugly turn of events with former south zone organising secretary M K Alagiri. The timing was unfortunate. We didn’t have enough time to shore up our defences once he was expelled from the party,” the leader added.

He added that it was unlikely that any change would be made to the postings of office-bearers or district secretaries. “After treasurer Stalin offered to step down, a number of district secretaries also prepared to sacrifice their posts. But the senior leaders of the party had dismissed such suggestions. Further, all the office-bearers are well entrenched, and it will be difficult to shift them,” he added.
