MADURAI: Two youths sustained minor burn injuries in an acid ‘attack’ while they were participating in a ‘Manjal Neerattu Vizha’ (turmeric bathing ceremony) at a temple festival in Samayanallur here on Thursday.

Relatives of the injured M Vinoth Kumar (27) and R Prabakaran (26), both hailing from Sathyamurthy Nagar in Samayanallur, claimed that a young member of the family had mistakenly sprayed acid on them since the yellow liquid in the acid bottle resembled turmeric water. However, police were unwilling to buy the theory and suspect that the boy could have deliberately sprayed acid following a disgruntlement with the youth over some issue.

“Vinoth and Prabakaran were participating in the ‘Manjal Neerattu Vizha’ and spraying water on each other. Suddenly a family member (name withheld by police) sprayed a yellow liquid on them and both sustained injures on their face, chest and other parts of the upper body,” a police officer said. Going by the minor nature of injuries, police suspect that the accused could have diluted the acid. Both have been admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment.
