TIRUCHY :In a tragic incident, a man and his son were killed while his wife and two year-old-daughter sustained grievous injuries in a road accident, when all four of them were heading towards Madurai on a bike to participate in a get-together, on Sunday.

According to police, M Velmurugan (32), of West Ambikapuram in Tiruchy was working as a lorry driver in a private organic fertilizer manufacturing company in Ariyamangalam.

On Sunday, he was proceeding towards Madurai on a bike with his wife V Kavitha (25) and his two children V Yogeshwaran (5) and V Abirami (2).

When they neared the Mannarpuram roundabout, a lorry heading towards Pollachi after unloading consignments in Pudukkottai mowed them down.

Eye witnesses said the four were trapped beneath the lorry’s chassis after it hit the bike and they shouted and ran towards the lorry in order to alert the driver Sivaraj, a native of Pollachi.

A foxed Sivaraj, who was allegedly drunk, suddenly took the vehicle in the reverse in a bid to escape from mob fury.

Yogeshwarn was crushed under the wheels and died on the spot. While the rest of the family members were grievously injured and were rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital where Velmurugan succumbed to his injuries.

A mob gathered around the vehicle and  beat up the lorry driver besides shattering the windshield of his vehicle. On information, the North Traffic investigation wing police and KK Nagar police rushed to the spot and rescued the lorry driver from the mob’s clutches and arrested him. Further investigations are on.
