THOOTHUKUDI : The special branch police busted a spurious liquor manufacturing unit at Neelpuram near Tiruchendur and seized 1,235 litres of illicit produce, on Monday. The personnel also arrested two persons in connection with the racket.

Sources said that the special branch raided a house in Neelpuram and arrested Jebaraj and Arunachalam for running the unit. The duo was later handed over to the Prohibition Wing police, who produced them before a court, which remanded them in custody.

Police said that the duo had been running the unit for the past several years. However, specific input about the location came only on Monday.

Sources said that the accused used to procure spirit from a chemical store. Elaborating on the process, the sources said that the accused used to dilute the spirit with water and then add some powders for taste and colour of brandy.
