500 Kg Red Sanders Seized; Smugglers Give the Slip to Police

VELLORE: Sholinghur police on Sunday seized around 500 kg of red sander logs and confiscated the car in which it was smuggled after a hot chase for nearly 10 kilometres from  Neelakandarayapettai to Walajapet.

According to sources, Inspector of Police Suresh along with his team was conducting vehicle checks at Neelakandarayapettai in the early hours of Sunday. At 2.30 am, a TATA Safari, bearing the registration number KL 27 B3 headed towards Vellore, sped away on seeing the police. Growing suspicious over the occupants of the vehicle, police chased the vehicle till Walajapet. Fearing that they would be caught, the occupants of the vehicle abandoned the car near the Housing Board area in Walajapet and escaped. When police conducted a check, they found 28 logs of red sander, stacked at the rear of the car. The worth of the seized red sander logs and vehicle was estimated to be around Rs  5 lakh, police said.

Police handed over the vehicle and red sander logs to forest department. Initial Enquiry revealed that the registration number of the vehicle was fake.
