CHENNAI: Sinking of unauthorised borewells will now attract severe punishment, the Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court.
The government has amended the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994, the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919, and the Chennai Metropolitan Area Ground Water [Regulation] Amendment Act, 1987, to enforce strict regulation of borewell construction.
The government gave its response to the first bench of the Madras High Court comprising Justice S K Kaul and Justice M Sathyanarayanan on August 27 following a petition filed by one GSivakami.
The government assured the bench that the rules will be widely publicised and the provisions strictly enforced.
