CHENNAI: A 20-year-old catering college student was fatally run over by a rashly driven tipper lorry which rammed into the bike on which he was riding pillion with a friend near Tambaram on Friday night.

Police said the victim, K Rahul, a native of Neyveli in Cuddalore district, was proceeding on the two-wheeler driven by his friend, Gowtham, on GST Road near Pallavaram when a tipper lorry hit them from behind. While Rahul was killed on the spot, Gowtham is undergoing treatment. The victim, studying in a catering college on ECR, was picked up by Gowtham, a second year engineering student of a deemed university at Kattankulathur to meet a common friend.

“They were returning on the bike late night and were also apparently speeding. The tipper lorry attempted to overtake and hit the bike,” said a traffic police officer.

As the bike skidded off the road, the duo fell down with Rahul, coming under the rear wheel of the lorry. He died on the spot. Gowtham was taken to hospital and police said his condition is out of danger as on Saturday evening. The lorry driver is absconding and Chrompet police are investigating.
