5,828 Offers, VIT Breaks Record

VELLORE: The Vellore Institute of Technology has, for the fourth consecutive year, set a record in the number of job offers made to its students.

A total of 5,828 job offers were made to four thousand plus students of VIT by four companies-Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro Technology and Accenture in a single slot of recruitment drive that started on September 1.

VIT Chancellor G.Viswanthan said, ‘VIT sets and breaks its own record in several spheres, including placement. He added that contrary to the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM)employability statistics that claim only 20 percent of engineering graduates were employable, VIT has placed 90 to 95 per cent of its students every year. “Next year we will place 100 per cent of our students and break this year’s record.”

Vice-President Sekar Viswanathan noted that students from B.Tech, M.Tech, M.S.[Software Engineering), MCA, M.Sc (computer science) and M.Sc (electronics) were placed as part of the recruitment drive this year. “Four thousand-odd students were registered for placement this year and we expect several more recruiters to recruit our students soon,” he added.

The campus recruitments for 2015 graduating batch started with the M.Tech internship placements on June 17 with Intel recruiting 38 students. Companies that recruited M.Tech students for internships included NetApp, GE, VmWare, Cummins, Trimble, Altiux, Continental, Ingersoll Rand, Robert & Bosch, Alcatel Lucent, DEP, Athena Health. 235 students have been recruited for internships.

VIT offered Slot 1 to Accenture, Cognizant,Wipro and Infosys. Wipro hired 1,141 students, Accenture 1,324, Infosys 1,452 and Cognizant 1,911. The total of 5,828  offers surpasses last year’s total of 3934 offers . Cognizant has surpassed its own record at VIT beating its previous highest of 1820            offers.

This is the first time each of the four IT companies are making offers to more than 1,000 students from one institution in a given year, said vice president G V Selvam.

eBay, DeShaw and Flipkart recruited 15 students with a salary pack of more than 15 lakhs per annum. Code Nation which has offered the highest package so far (more than 20 lakhs) recruited one student. Deloitte [67), Schneider Electric [31) are a few other recruiters.

Core Engineering companies like Maruti, ITC, L&T Constructions, Ford will be conducting the recruitment drive in the coming months.

VIT expects to be entered into the Limca Book of Records for the fourth consecutive year.
