2 Chennai Youth Held for Killing Driver, Stealing Car

VELLORE: Two youth were arrested and placed in custody at the Arcot Police Station in connection with a murder-cum-carjacking case. The youth were part of a gang involved in a number of carjacking crimes.

Sources in the police department said, the duo—M Ashok Kumar (25) of Aminjikarai and A Rajesh (26) of Avadi, confessed to the murder of a car driver, who was later identified as Wasim Akram (27) of Ambur, working for a private tannery company in Maduravoyal in Chennai. Akram’s decomposed body was found on August 18 on the foothills of Kathiyavadi Hills near Arcot.  

Eight members of the same gang are already behind bars at the Vellore Central Prison for Men after one of their carjacking attempts was foiled by Sathuvachari Police and were arrested two weeks ago. They were identified as R Murali[26), V Sarath(24), V Anbu(23) Shyam(24), Omprakash(24), Suresh(29), Ekambaram(25), and Rajkumar(24). 

Police sources said that Akram’s  father Imtiaz had filed a complaint a month ago with the Maduravoyal Police about his missing son. Akram was transporting leather from Maduravoyal to Ambur in a SUV.

There was no trace of Akram and the vehicle after the vehicle had passed through the toll plaza at Walajapet. Kumar and Rajesh confessed to the crime upon interrogation by the police.

From the information they provided, a police official said,“The duo along with their acquaintances drove away the Bolero with the leather materials after strangulating Akram to death. They abandoned the body on the foothills of Kathiyavadi Hills in Arcot police station limit.” 

Following the confession of the duo, the police handed over the accused to the Arcot police, who had identified the decomposed body of Akram at Kathiyavadi Hills. The police are working on recovering the stolen properties.It may be recalled that the duo’s eight associates had been arrested for assaulting Sivakumar (28) of Arcot and hijacking his car on August 30.
