4 Killed in Car-lorry Smash Near Salem

SALEM: Four persons were killed on the spot and two others seriously injured in a collision involving a lorry and a car near Mammangam in the early hours on Wednesday.

Police said that one Kanagaraj (55) of of Chikkanahalli near Bangalore along with his family members was going in a car to a temple near Oddanchatram in Dindugul district in Tamil Nadu. Kanagaraj was driving the car.

Around 1.30 am on Wednesday, when the car was passing through Mamangam in the district rains lashed the region. So, Kanagaraj decided to halt the vehicle till the downpour recedes and turned the car left to enter a service road. But a lorry coming in the opposite direction collided head on with the car. In the impact, Kanagaraj, his wife Malar (50), daughter Kavipriya (33) and grandson Vishen Kumar (8) were killed on the spot, while Kanagaraj’s son-in-law Saravanakumar (40) and his daughter Shanmathy sustained grievous injuries. Both the injured were admitted to a private hospital in Karuppur.

Police have  registered a case and have launched a search for the lorry driver, who fled the spot soon after the accident.
