Barber Finally Cuts Dalits' Hair

SIVAKASI: A barber in Anupankulam near here has consented to cut hair of Dalit people in his village following the intervention of members of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF).

The barber Govindasamy, who allegedly refused to cut hair of Dalits for nearly 30 years, agreed to cut hair of all people without discrimination in the presence of the revenue and police.

The district secretary of TNUEF Gnanaguru said they learnt about Govindasamy’s practice while conducting a survey on untouchability. Later, they submitted a petition to the collector and the SP. “On Saturday, TNUEF members, police and revenue officials went to the village and asked Govindasamy to cut hair for Dalit people in the village. Initially, he refused but eventually agreed,” said Gnanaguru.
