CHENNAI: Former DMK minister K P P Samy’s 27-year-old son, Iniyavan, allegedly hanged himself. Suspected drug addiction and family dispute in his house at KVK Kuppam, Thiruvottiyur were stated to be the causes.

Iniyavan’s wife Prasanya noticed him hanging in his room and informed the police. Iniyavan got married in 2014 and the couple have a six-month-old baby.

Samy, who was fisheries department minister during the DMK regime, was camping in Tiruchy for the Srirangam bypoll campaign when the incident occurred.

“Iniyavan returned home on Friday night and went to sleep in a room on the first floor. His wife and child slept on the ground floor. Around 7.30 am, she peeped through the window as he did not open the door and was shocked to find him hanging,” said a police officer.

The relatives broke open the door and took him to a private hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.

While Iniyavan did not leave any suicide note, police suspect that he took the extreme step because of his addiction-related depression.

“The family members said he had tried suicide earlier over the same issue. We are probing the matter,” said police.

Samy’s wife too died recently of illness. The former minister returned to Chennai on Saturday after he was informed.

The body was handed over to the family members after autopsy at the Stanley Government Hospital.
