20 College Faculty Booked in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Around 20 college faculty of the Avinashilingam University for Women were booked for unlawful assembly by the Coimbatore City Police on Saturday.

The faculty members had reportedly gone to the college to observe the memorial of the college founder, but were turned away at the gates by the university management. They then went Bharathi Park and paid homage, which attracted the attention of the city police, who registered a case against them under sections 143 (punishment for being a member of an unlawful assembly) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the IPC.

City Police Commissioner, A Amalraj, speaking to Express, said that the teachers did not get permission from the police to gather at the location, which had led to the case being filed against them.
