Sundaranar University Students Want Professor Dismissed for Lewd Talk

Demanding dismissal of a faculty member for allegedly using abusive words in class, students of the History department at the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University staged a sit-in protest.

TIRUNELVELI: Demanding dismissal of a faculty member for allegedly using abusive words in class, students of the History department at the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University staged a sit-in protest inside the university premises at Abhishekpatti here on Tuesday.

Registrar John De Britto’ efforts to arrive at a settlement was of no avail as students declared that they would continue agitating till their demands are met.

The first year class comprises 30 students out of which nine are boys while the second year class has only girls numbering 17.

A girl student said that a complaint made to the university registrar on July 21, by first year students, with copies marked to the higher authorities has not had any impact.

Noting that the accused faculty has been replaced with another member, she alleged that the administration is not acting according to rules concerning harassment of women.

When Express contacted John DeBritto, he said that the university has a grievance redressal cell of which both professors and students are members.

He further said that as two student members had completed their studies, two others were appointed in their place on Tuesday and a meeting of the cell too has been scheduled for Thursday.

Regretting the protest, he said that students went ahead with their agitation despite having been told to air their grievances on Thursday.
