CHENNAI: The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) ordered the municipal administration department to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of 52 deceased sanitary workers from Tamil Nadu.
On Thursday, a commission member, Lata Omprakash Mahto and other officials laid the responsibility for paying the compensation on the officials who appointed them. There are 460 manual scavengers in the district and 252 within the corporation limit.
In a bid to rehabilitate these manual scavengers, the NCSK instructed the civic body during the meet to build new houses for families of these manual scavengers, conduct regular health checkups, provide an alternate livelihood by training them in other fields.
