Municipal Schools Get Smart Classrooms

COIMBATORE: The Mettupalayam Municipality opened three smart classrooms on Saturday in its schools.

A new school building was also constructed, which was inaugurated by District Collector Archana Patnaik.

The total expenditure of the project was Rs 31.45 lakh, sources said.

In the smart classrooms, there will be touchscreen whiteboard apart from desks, benches and drinking water. The students will not have to sit on the floor.

“We have introduced smart-class project for our schools to be as good as private schools. The new system will also help attract more students to municipal schools. Admissions to  them are falling,” Municipal Chairman Sathish Kumar told Express.

The Mettupalayam Municipality is also planning to introduce the facility in more schools in the town.

A recent meeting of the municipal council had approved the implementation of the project at the VOC Municipal High School at cost of Rs 4.30 lakh.

The council also allotted Rs l7 lakh to create the same facility at the Nehru Primary School in Ward 6 and Nethaji Primary School in Ward 14.

Smart classrooms will be created in Valluvar Primary School (Ward 6) and Kattur Primary School (Ward 22).

“The project has been implemented to make Mettupalayam a model municipality in as far as the smart classrooms are concerned,” Sathish Kumar added.
