VIRUDHUNAGAR:A 40-year-old auto driver was hospitalised after he was allegedly assaulted in police custody.

Sources said the autodriver Marimuthu, of Pudhu Theru in  Virudhunagar,  was, on January 27, taken by  eight policemen to the Virudhunagar East police station from his house and allegedly assaulted due to some problem between him and the doctor in the area.

“The 21 police personnel, started assaulting me after tying my hands. Later, one of the cops took me to the hospital and forced me to tell the doctors that I sustained injuries from a fall after consuming alcohol. If I didn’t say so, the cop said he would foist cases against me. So I heeded,” said Marimuthu.

A top police official said “Marimuthu got himself admitted to the hospital, saying policemen assaulted him.” No such incident occurred, he added.
