PUDUCHERRY: Eight under trials lodged in the Kalapet Central Prison allegedly attempted to commit suicide by consuming a potion on Wednesday night.
Sources said that the under trials reportedly consumed a mixture of phenyl and shikakai solution after they had failed to get bail in their respective cases. Meanwhile, after finding them, the jail authorities rushed them, who have several cases including murder against them, to a nearby private medical college hospital for treatment.
According to sources, six of them were taken back to the prison after treatment. However, two under trials, Ayyanaar and Deenah, were shifted to the government general hospital where their condition is said to be stable. When contacted, Kalapet police revealed the names of only two under trials and informed that a case would be registered after receiving a complaint from prison authorities.
It may be recalled that a woman inmate Ambika committed suicide inside the Kalapet Central prison where she was lodged in a case relating to her minor daughter’s marriage. The woman committed suicide following frustration after she was denied bail.
Meanwhile, the police arrested another under trial, Ashwin, for possessing marijuana and his associate, who is suspected to have delivered it to him. Ashwin, who has several cases against him including murder, was taken to the court two days ago. During a check after his return, the authorities recovered marijuana on his possession.
On enquiry, he revealed that his associate, who too has a murder case against him but was out on bail, gave the packet to him.
