MADURAI: In what could be a boon to the parents of those who are born on February 24 - the birthday of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa - the city corporation has decided to issue instant birth certificates, that too, free of cost. Announcing this on Monday, Mayor V V Rajan Chellappa said that a special council meeting would be called on Tuesday to pass a resolution in this regard.

Earlier, Electricity Minister Natham R Viswanathan had announced that gold rings would be given to babies born on Tuesday at the Government Rajaji Hospital. He is scheduled to distribute the same at a function on Thursday.

That may take at least a month.

To mark the 67th birthday of Jayalalithaa, a series of events like offering prayers and announcing beneficial schemes have been lined up for Tuesday.
