HM Cadre Piqued by Idol Removal

COIMBATORE: Revenue officials with the help of police demolished a temple that was being built on a reserved spot, covered the temple foundation with sand and removed the statue of the deity.

The idol was removed as the temple was being raised illegally on a reserved spot in Sangampalayam village near Pollachi town. Though the revenue officials had directed the residents of Palaniyappa Nagar and members of the Hindu Munnani to stop the temple work, they did not respond. Revenue officials said the building work was banned on the reserved site.

Members of Hindu Munnani were up in arms after revenue department officials seized the idol from the temple under construction.

Members of TPDK added to the confusion by issuing notices to locals last week, stating that they were planning to build a library (Periyar Padipagam) at the same spot. The possible fight between TPDK and HM members was averted by revenue officials who informed both the parties that they would not be allowed any building work. The Pollachi tahsildar Shanmugaraj convened a peace meeting with the TPDK and Hindu Munnani on Tuesday morning and asked them to build the temple at some other appropriate place.
