VILLUPURAM:As a bid to rob a 75kg Ayyappa idol failed, unidentified miscreants took away a 15kg bronze arch behind the idol early on Saturday at Kollathur near Thiruvennainallur.

On Friday around 8pm, the local priest Ranjith (20) locked the temple after the evening rites. On Saturday morning, he was shocked to find the temple lock broken and noticed that the Ayyappa idol was tampered with. The miscreants failed to move the 75kg idol, so they broke the bronze arch behind the idol and took it away.

On getting the information, the Kollathur village president Alamelu Ealumalai and local villagers lodged a complaint with Thiruvennainallur police station.
