DHARMAPURI: The Harur Sugar Mill special officer, S Kavitha, faces an enquiry after she was found playing a game on her mobile phone at the monthly farmer’s grievance redressal day meeting in Dharmapuri on Friday.

Kavitha played the game on her mobile phone while sitting next to the district collector. As the issue came to light after some news channels relayed the video of the incident, the district administration asked her for an explanation.

The District Collector K Vivekanandan told Express that, “We are enquiring about it. As she is of DRO rank, we cannot take direct action against her. We asked her for an explanation within 10 days. Once we get it, we will forward it to the Public Department, as they only can take action. We have already informed the department.”

K N Mallaiyan, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasaiyigal Sangam (TNVS) affiliated to CPM told Express, “The senior officials should conduct a thorough enquiry and if the allegation is true, severe action should be taken against her.” Already farmers were suffering without water and they believe that grievance day meeting would end their woes. But the official’s attitude was discouraging, he said.

D T Saravanan, a farmer in Thokkampatti said, “Usually government policies are against farmers, but now even officials appointed to look after the welfare of farmers seem indifferent.”

Attempts to contact S Kavitha were futile,  and none took the call at the sugar mill office.
