Foreign Investors Doubled: Minister

CHENNAI:Denying allegations that the Tamil Nadu government has failed to attract foreign investments, State Industries Minister P Thangamani on Friday said the AIADMK government had attracted foreign investments worth Rs 60,620 crores, double of what was witnessed from 2000 to 2011.

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion functioning under the Union government had released the statistics, he told the Assembly, while replying to the discussion on demand for grants to his department.

According to the Central Statistical Organisation report for the year 2012-2013, Rs 2,92,260.06 crores had been invested in 36,869 companies in the State, the third highest in the country. The number of SMEs registered in the State in 2014-2015 was 1,43,104 and the total investment was Rs 24,349.65 crores, while the number of jobs generated was 6,51,180, the minister said. The value of exports from the State, as per the report of the Federation of Indian Exports Organisation was Rs 2,15,400 crores, which was also the third highest in the country.

The AIADMK government had set up 20 industrial parks and six special economic zones while 2,262 companies had been allocated 19,774 acres of land. The total investment in them would be Rs 1,02,283 crores and the companies would generate 6.02 lakh jobs, Thangamani said.

In his policy note, the minister said “Tamil Nadu has emerged as the second largest among Indian States in 2013-14 with a Gross State Domestic Product of Rs 4,80,618 crores. The State has registered a growth rate of 7.29 per cent much higher than the national average of 4.74 per cent”.

“Tamil Nadu is set to emerge as the most industrialised State in India. With the objective of catapulting TN to the higher growth trajectory, the government was organising the Global Investors Meet on September 9, 10 this year and was targeting atleast one lakh crores of rupees of investment in infrastructure, manufacturing and services,” he said.
