PUDUCHERY: Dr.K V Raman,Director of Health and Family Welfare Department today inaugurated the injectable Inactiviated Polio Vaccine(IVP) under routine Immunization as part of Global polio Endgame Strategic Plan to provide protection against wild polio virus type one, two and three .
The IVP is being administered in two fractional doses(0.1ml each dose) at six weeks and 14 weeks along with first and third dosages of Pentavalent vaccine in all government institutions.
This would be in addition to the regular oral polio vaccination in regular immiunization programme,according to Dr Raman. Around 93,000 children would be given the injectable vaccination.
He said India has been certified polio free by World health Organization on March 27,2014 and Puducherry had the last case in1998 following which there has been no case in the whole of the union territory.Though,India is free of polio, the chance of transmission of wild polio virus still persists and to mitigate the risk of importation from other countries ,the present programme is being undertaken, he added.
Deputy Director Dr.Sudha Goyal, NRHM director Dr.Kalimuthu, Deputy Director (Public Health ) Dr.G .Raghunathan, among others participated in the function.
