BDU's scholar takes part in NASA's conference on climate change

TIRUCHY: Marking the name of the  university in the pages of history at a time when the world is debating Climate Change, a scholar from Bharathidasan University presented his thesis at an international conference conducted with NASA’s funding in the United States of America, in May 2016.

At the summit, ‘Connecting Paleo and Modern Oceanographic Data to Understand AMOC Decadal to Centuries’ held at the National Climate and Atmospheric Research Center (NCAR), in Boulder, Colorado, USA from May 23 to 25, 2016, A Sivachandiran, a research scholar from the Department of Marine Sciences of BDU, was among the 45 participants. He was the only Indian.

Speaking to Express on returning from the US after a fortnight-long journey, Sivachandiran said, “The workshop was organised by the University of Maryland in Association with US CLIVAR, NSF Marine Geology and Geophysics, and PAGES. Funding for US CLIVAR is provided by NASA, NOAA, NSF and the US Department of Energy. I felt very privileged to be a part of this huge internationally- reputed collaboration.”

“The world is now facing a huge natural crisis which could be the worst situation that would ever happen to mankind. The entire planet is facing a long list of problems namely, Global Warming, Green House effect and Ozone depletion. These problems are mainly created by climate change which in turn is an effect of man-made hazards such as pollution. So, this conference focused on Reconstruction of the past, pre-instrumental climate variability from high-resolution single and multiple proxy data-sets advanced and provided new information on decadal variability during the pre-industrial era,” he explained, when asked about the conference.

“Motivation for this workshop began with the recognition that collaboration between the physical oceanography and the paleoceanography communities that is needed for further AMOC research,” he said.
