Granddad's Rs 1 lakh incentive propels her to work extra hard, score State second rank

TIRUCHY: Motivation is an important factor for a student who is good in academics, as it can give that extra push needed to achieve great heights.

Acting as one such great motivation, a grandfather has turned a hero for a State topper from the district.

H Divyashree, the State second rank holder, was conferred with Rs 1 lakh as cash award by her grandfather as he had promised.

Divyashree, daughter of TRP Hari Jairam, a petty shopowner in Kuttakarai village near Thuraiyur, scored a total of 498 out of 500 marks in the class X board exam.

She was a student of Zamindars Higher Secondary School, Thuraiyur.

With a monthly income of barely Rs 5000- Rs 10,000, Hari Jairam was running the family on a low budget.

Dharmalingam, Divyashree’s grandfather, acknowledging the dedication and hardwork she put in for the board exam, promised her Rs 1 lakh if she bagged a State rank in order to help her pursue higher secondary education.

Taking this as a challenge, Divyashree got herself started and  she, with great determination began investing more time and effort to prepare for the exams.

Finally, her hardwork paid off and more than that her grandfather kept his word. She stood top in the district and second in the state, with 498 marks.

Dharmalingam came down to the Collectorate on Wednesday, where Divyashree was invited by the district administration for a felicitation ceremony.

There, he gave the cash award to his granddaughter as he had assured her of.

Speaking to Express, Dharmalingam said, “This is not only meant to motivate my grand-daughter who secured a State rank, but also to encourage families of all public exam aspirants across the State to motivate their children and help them achieve their best.”

“The family’s support is the most important factor for any child to perform well. Taking this as an opportunity, I request people to support their children to motivate them to do well and achieve their goals in life,” he added.

Dharmalingam has also promised Divyashree that he would present a cash award of `2 lakh, if she topped the State in her Plus-two board examinations as well.

Good luck, Divyashree! Go for it.
