Defaced by polls, Tamil Nadu Government schools need scrubbing

Most of the government schools, which served as polling booths during the elections, have their task cut out.

TIRUCHY: With less than a week for the next academic session to begin, most of the government schools, which served as polling booths during the elections, have their task cut out and it is to clear the posters and markings dotting school walls.

“We have to clean our premises with the help of our students after the year begins,” said a headmaster of a State-run school in the city, on condition of anonymity.

More often than not, it is the PWD that paints and refurnishes the government schools at regular intervals. “We have to wait for PWD’s next visit”, he added.

When Express brought the issue to M Ganesh Kumar, the RDO who was the Returning Officer during the elections, he said, “We still have time till the next academic year begins. By then, we would definitely remove the posters and give schools thier old look.”

Refuting Ganesh’s version, the headmaster claimed, “This school has witnessed many elections in the past, but not once did the election officials paint the school.”
