Report on School Fire Compensation

CHENNAI: The Commission of Inquiry, headed by Justice K Venkatraman, a retired judge of the High Court, constituted to go into the aspects of payment of compensation to the families of the children, who had perished in a devastating fire accident at the Sri Krishna School and Sri Saraswathi Nursery Schools in Kumbakonam on July 16, 2004, on Thursday submitted a report to the Registrar-General of the Madras High Court.

As many as 94 children, including a teacher, were charred to death in the fire and 16 more seriously injured. The State government had granted a compensation of `50,000 to each of the victims’ families.

Seeking more compensation, the father of one of the victim moved the Madras High Court.

He also sought strict action against the officials for their negligence in sanctioning permission to the managements to run the schools.

Justice D Hariparanthaman (since retired) appointed the Commission on September 14, 2014 to go into the aspect of fixing the quantum of compensation.

And Justice Venkatraman handed over the report in a sealed cover to the Registrar-General on Thursday.
